MIDLAND RED PRODUCTION – NEARING THE END

143 single-deck service buses, which took from 1967 to 1970 to construct, were the last buses built by Midland Red. Production had fallen to an uneconomic level as the company failed to compete with pay in local car factories.

They were typical of the buses Midland Red had produced over the years – no frills, efficient and reliable. As in the past, this final production run included some buses with better quality seating for the company’s longer routes, including this bus, no.5901.

5901 entered service at Worcester garage in July 1968 and later worked from Hinckley, Stafford and Leamington where it retired in September 1980.

Preservation

5901 was purchased by a bus preservation society, passing through various hands including the Worcester Bus Preservation Society. It was purchased by supporters of this museum in 2008. It has been thoroughly overhauled and repainted.
